It is also worth noting just how many different kinds of styles the soundtrack encompasses- slow instrumental pieces, sweeping symphonies, choral pieces, vocal music, they've got everything- and it's all done exceptionally well. Basically, if the music was any lesser than what it is, Xenoblade 2 as an experience would be far diminished compared to what we got. The thing with Xenoblade 2's OST is not just how musically accomplished it is (because it is that, and how!), but also how evocative it is- listening to a piece from the OST even outside of context and never having played the game will evoke the kind of emotional response the game is trying to elicit from the player when they are playing the game each piece of Xenoblade 2's music feels resonant on a personal, intimate, emotional level, and that is something very few pieces of game music can actually manage for themselves out of context.īut equally stunning with Xenoblade 2 is just how well the music goes with the actual game itself, in spite of this- basically, the game itself is a (sometimes cacophonous) symphony of its systems, design, world, art, characters, story, and music- and the music plays a very big part in this symphony, and in contributing to Xenoblade 2 becoming the kind of experience that it is. Xenoblade 2's OST is not just something that should be mentioned by the way when discussing great OSTs, it should be headlining the discussion- because, I feel, and I feel like this is as close to an indisputable opinion as you will ever come, Xenoblade 2's OST is an all time great.

it was just great all around.īut one OST that gets lost in the shuffle when discussing last year's music is Xenoblade 2, presumably because of how late in the year it came, and that is a crying shame. You know, last year was great for game OSTs- we got Persona 5, which is my all time favorite game OST, Breath of the Wild was a great example of music and minimalism, Nier Automata has a soundtrack that is quite unlike anything else, Super Mario Odyssey broke new ground for Mario with its music.
